About Us
At Leyden we specialize in heritage plastering.
It’s our aim to bring period property back to life by using true craftsmanship on renders, hand-crafted pointing, lime plasters and decorative features.
We’re a family run business, operated and owned by Matt and Hannah Massey. Based in Plymouth, we have years of experience in the heritage business and an unrivalled portfolio of period property restoration across the whole of South West region.
Our company has knowledge, an appreciation of the very fabric of older buildings and a detailed understanding of the techniques and materials required to complete any job in an honest, respectful and friendly way.
If you’re restoring a period property or if you’re redeveloping one on behalf of a client then why don’t you start a conversation with us at Leyden. We are after-all, serious about craftsmanship.

True restoration work starts with passion.
Passion for the project, the building itself and most importantly for the craft. At Leyden we have that passion, believing that it’s not always about the money, but it is always about getting it right for the sake of the building itself.
Certain jobs require specialists and when it comes to heritage buildings, it’s important to remember that owners are technically only custodians of these properties and it’s partly their job to look after them and pass them on to future generations.
But that’s only one of the reasons why Matt and Hannah Massey started Leyden, they also wanted to educate people in how heritage and listed buildings should be preserved. If we’re not careful, lime plastering, pointing and rendering will become a dying art, then who will look after these buildings.
Between the two of them Matt and Hannah have over 30 years in business most of which has been in and around the building and plastering industry. Their complimentary skills mean that the business runs smoothly and efficiently, resulting in perfectly restored properties and satisfied clients, all of which are content in the knowledge that they’ve done the right thing by the buildings.
What is it they say, “if you want to understand the future, look to the past”. Traditional craftsmanship has stood the test of time and it will do way into the future, especially with older property.
At Leyden, we understand this process, we know how important craftsmanship is and we appreciate that education is the way forward if we’re to preserve buildings. At Leyden it’s about getting it right for the building.
