Are there grants available for lime render work?

The short answer to this question is that there is grant funding available for certain lime render projects but there are two important things to bear in mind with this sort of approach. Firstly, eligibility has a fairly narrow criteria which means that it’s only for very specific projects and secondly, like everything ‘grant’ related’ it takes time, so don’t expect a cheque in the next few days.

There are two main sources for potential grant funding for lime render work and they are Historic England and the UK Government through the Repair Grants for Heritage at Risk (previously Grants for Historic Buildings, Monument and Designed Landscapes).

But when it comes to grant funding it’s important to understand that more often than not eligibility tends to focus on buildings that have a public. They’re usually on the Listed Buildings Register and they invariably have some sort of historical connection to the local community. So, if you’re thinking about getting the front of your Victorian terrace house re-rendered then you probably won’t be in luck, not unless Horatio Nelson once lived there.

But this shouldn’t preclude some of our established clients at Leyden because over the years we’ve worked with a good number of well-known public buildings that are important community assets across the South-West. Theses include the iconic, Pannier Market in Dartmouth and the Synagogue in Plymouth city centre, which as one of the oldest Synagogues in the English speaking world, is quite rightly Grade II listed.

The Holy Grail of grant eligibility when looking for additional funding for lime render work is a combination of buildings that are historically significant and ones that appear on the Heritage at Risk Register. If the building ticks both of these boxes then it’s worth starting a conversation either through your architect or even direct with the local Conservation Officer, they will always be able to point you in the right direction. The best bit about the Government led scheme is that the timeline is open-ended without a specific deadline, but that might not last forever.

At Leyden we’re experts in lime renders as well as hand-crafted pointing, lime plasters and decorative features. We believe passionately in the preservation of heritage buildings so we’re always more than happy to help advise clients when it comes to potential grant funding, after all, once these historical buildings have gone, you won’t be able to simply replace them.
